Investigators at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Duke University Medical Center, Johns Hopkins and Kaiser Health have completed a trial to see if short monthly phone calls with a Counselor or a Health & Wellness Coach are effective at helping people maintain weight loss. Although weight regain at the conclusion of a weight program is common, 45% of patients who used a 10-15 minute personal phone conversation with a counselor/coach each week, and a 45- to 60- minute individual face-to-face contact every 4 months, maintained clinically beneficial weight loss after 30 months. This was higher than the group that did not maintain personal contact with counselors/coaches. Source: JAMA
